A Cruelty Free Vegan Alternative to Leather
There are more and more people who have moved to a vegan diet which is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derivedingredients, so when we say someone is vegan is clear to most people that that person will not eat anything that comes from an animal. It will not make sense that Vegan people wears anything that comes from an animal, will it? So, when you hear vegan leather, what does it mean? Isn’t leather coming from an animal? Well, Vegan alternative to leather refers to a fabric that looks like natural leather but it does not actually comes from animals, it is a cruelty free fabric. It probably is not completly correct to say Vegan alternative to leather but within the fashion industry is a term that has been used for years to refer to a material that looks like leather.
Natural leather is probably the most high resistant and elegant fabric used for the last decades, however we have to remember that it comes from an animals that have been killed. Even in most cases the animal has not been killed for the skin but for the meat, there are more and more people that prefer not to consume meat and of course not to wear anything that comes from an animal that has been killed. It is also important to bear in mind that most of the leather have been tanned with chrome which is harmful for the environment and for the people that work with them. There are already leathers that are chrome free tanning, however the quality is not as good as chrome tanned leathers and sometimes the leather losses its color or does not offer the same resistant.
If we are concern about the environment, we have to bear in mind that most of the leather commonly used comes from cows. A cow does on overage release up to 120 kg of Methane per year which is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2.
So, there are several reasons why we should start thinking on vegan leather.
Vegan alternative to leather is often made from polyurethane, which gets damages after few weeks and it cannot be recycled. It can also be made from innovative and organic materials such as pineapple leaves, cork, apple peels, other fruit waste, but for the daily basis use, resistance might not be enough and for an accessory that is going to be used everyday might not be the best solution if you want a product that is long lasting.
At Canussa we have chosen a high resistant microfiber Made in Spain that looks like leather and it offer high resistance, and compared to polyurethane, can be recycled. Aditionally, is worth to mention that the STANDARD Oeko-Tex 100, an independent testing and certification system, has certified that the fabric we use has been tested and meets the required criteria to be considered an ecological fabric free of toxic substances, toxic to health. We love this fabric because it allows us to keep using same artisan techniques that have been using for decades in Spain to produce elegant and long lasting bags.
Another advantage of the vegan fabric we use is that can be washed and is water resistant. Even if leather usually have a waterproof treatment, it can get damaged with water, another good reason for changing to vegan leather!
So, overall vegan leather can be a good sustainable alternative to natural leather, and this is the option we have chosen at Canussa, so we can create elegant and stylish creations while being sustainable. You can see our products at our “vegan shop“
